The 36-inch clearance rule
Always leave a minimum of 36 inches (3 feet) between the table edge and any wall or furniture. This allows chairs to be pulled out fully and people to walk around comfortably.
For dining rooms with frequent traffic (open-plan layouts), aim for 42–48 inches of clearance on all sides.
